Republic Services Caps Landfill with Flexible Solar Cover
Republic Services, Inc. is the first company to integrate solar technology to increase renewable energy output at its landfills. The company combined a first-of-its-kind solar technology with an existing biogas-to-energy system to turn its Tessman Road Landfill in San Antonio, Texas, into a sustainable energy park.
Republic Services, Inc. latest green energy venture will cover portions of soon to be closed areas of active landfills with flexible, laminate-type photovoltaic (PV) solar collection strips developed by United Solar. The flexible solar laminates, which capture the sun’s rays for conversion into electricity, are adhered directly to a Firestone manufactured synthetic green-colored geomembrane used to cover and close a landfill as it reaches capacity.

Renewable Energy. Using innovating solutions to create alternative fuel.
The saying, “one person’s trash is another’s treasure” is true. Through over 70 landfill gas-to-energy facilities, we capture and convert methane gas, which is naturally created at landfills, and create a renewable energy source. This low-cost, eco-friendly resource is used nationwide in a  variety of ways – from the generation of electric power and industrial boiler fuel to powering industrial production – and is just one of the options we are exploring to turn waste into energy.
The emission reductions achieved by Republic Services, Inc. current projects nationwide is equal to removing approximately 2.8 million vehicles from the road each year, providing heat/power to approximately 319,000 homes, or the carbon sequestration capability of 3.5 million acres of pine or fir forests.
Landfill Preservation. Giving back to the environment.
Republic Services, Inc. landfills are highly engineered facilities designed to safely contain waste, but they don’t have to stop there. When they’re closed, we search for alternative uses transforming suitable landfill properties into parks, golf courses and wild life habitats.
Fleet Efficiency. Going bio-diesel to reduce greenhouse emissions.
With one of the largest fleets in the nation, we’re always working to reduce our engine emissions. Today, a growing percentage of our fleet runs on cleaner burning b20 bio-diesel, as we continue our commitment to help positively impact the environment.
